Human Rights Education and Human Rights treaties

The United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education was proclaimed in December 1994 by the
General Assembly, spanning the period 1 January 1995 to 31 December 2004. In accordance with the relevant
provisions of international human rights instruments, and for the purposes of the Decade, human rights
education has been defined as training, dissemination and information efforts aimed at the building of a universal culture of human rights through the imparting of knowledge and skills and the moulding of attitude.

Several human rights treaties contain specific provisions relative to human rights education; in addition,
some treaty bodies have elaborated reporting guidelines, general comments or recommendations concerning
human rights education, training and information. A compilation of those provisions and documents follows.
